What’s going on in May?

Welcome to May!

I don’t know about you, but this has been a particularly long, dark winter for me. My energy has been way down and the weather has been less than inspiring.

But spring has sprung! And I am excited to tell you what’s going on this month for me πŸ™‚

My current projects, hobbies and pursuits

I am still getting a great deal of enjoyment out of growing sprouts. I gave up on curly cress microgreens and gave the seeds to one of my yoga students. Technically they are microgreens if you plant them in soil, and they are sprouts if you grow them in plain old water. Alfalfa and radish are my favourite and oh so easy to grow! I might be imagining it, but I am pretty sure they are giving me an added energy boost, too!

Did you see my blog on the mood boosting benefits of starting plants in the spring?https://zenwithgwen.com/2025/03/04/tips-for-the-kapha-season-nourish-new-life/

I have increased the number of plants growing at my house by starting tomatoes! Usually these are my husband’s thing but this year we are doing it together and trying something new. As you can see, I got peat pellets and a couple of old muffin trays. I think this may be our new preferred method!

I have even gotten a grow light and I think I will start branching out to growing herbs next. It is very rewarding to see my little plant babies growing!

I have also started working on a new home studio. The main floor of my apartment is open concept, which lends itself quite well to recording classes and teaching on Zoom because I can push all of the furniture out of the way. Unfortunately, the fact that it is open concept means that no one on the main floor can make any noise while I am teaching, so I have to kick my husband out of the house or ask him to sit very still for 60 to 90 minutes (which he loves).

So in a move that is very un-feng shui, I am turning the bedroom in to a secondary home studio. I know I’m the sleep expert and you’re not supposed to mix sleep with work, but I think I am going to make an exception this one time. So look forward to more content and classes from yours truly!

Recipes I’m working on

I bought dried chaga mushrooms ages ago. I thought, “Okay I need to get a coffee grinder to chop these up.” And then forgot about that. In February, someone offered me a free coffee grinder! I thought, “Wow this is amazing, I have been in desperate need of a coffee grinder for… hmm… I can’t quite remember what it was.”

So I bought coffee beans. And they made the absolute worst undrinkable coffee, but thanks to Costco’s amazing return policy I was able to return the 1kg bag. (What a ridiculously large committment to make to a new brand of coffee.)

So I was sitting around scratching my head wondering what it was that I was supposed to be grinding until a few days ago when I remembered! I was actually about to buy chaga mushroom powder when I remembered that I had some dried mushrooms at home. And a coffee grinder!!

I promise my brain usually works a bit better than this.

As of last night, I am armed with a cup of chaga powder and my pumpkin spice mix as I boldly go in to a whole new world of beverage creation!

Do you have any recommendations or requests for what I should do with my ground chaga? Please let me know in the comments!
